Table Captain

Really this is just a fancy way of saying initiative. Table captain, the term itself exudes power, and, if you think about it, that’s what it is. So now that I’ve introduced to you to this new term, I’m sure you’d like to know what it is and how to become one.

The idea is easy, but the application…now that’s the hard part.

Essentially to be a table captain, you are the leader of the poker table. You’re raising more than the other players each orbit. You’re acting first in the pots you’re involved in, and generally just being a thorn in the side of your opponents. The table captain puts on the pressure, and essentially at every opportunity takes the initiative in a given hand.

Whether it means leading out with a bet, or reraising a pot to take pot control, or shoving all in to get a weaker player to fold, it’s all about grabbing for power.

Now, the ideal condition to take this position as captain of the table is at a table of passive players. But there will be some times when you can’t be the table leader. The other players just won’t let you. Not because they’re trying to take control of the table, but it’s because their playing style is so loose and donkish that you have to be patient and just wait for hands to bust them. Then, once you end up taking them out, you can resume your relentless assault on the weaker players and continue to take blinds and build your stack, especially when you play poker online.

It’s paramount that you push to become this player when playing in multi table tournaments. It will increase your winrate dramatically. And it’s a style of play that is best suited for tournaments. It’s a little more aggressive than the tight aggressive style (which is conducive due to the rising blinds), but it’s not quite as loose as a donk or loose-aggressive maniac. Table captain is the balance between the two, the leader and the manipulator. You literally become the center of the game, and the poker universe revolves around you at the table you commandeer.
